Losing a job or ending a contract triggers an administrative process. The first registration with France Travail (formerly Pôle emploi) is a prerequisite for opening rights to unemployment benefits and accessing support. Gathering the right documents before starting the online process avoids back-and-forth and additional processing delays.

Employer certificate and payslips: the documents that determine your rights

The employer certificate is the central document for any first registration. It is based on this document that France Travail calculates the amount and duration of the return-to-work allowance (ARE). Without it, no compensation can be established.

Your former employer is required to provide it to you at the end of the employment contract, regardless of the reason for termination. If you have not received it, follow up in writing: France Travail cannot substitute for this legal obligation.

Payslips complement the certificate. They allow for verification of the declared amounts and cover the reference period of affiliation. All of these documents to present at the first Pôle emploi appointment must be consistent: dates, remuneration, and contract duration must match between the certificate and the payslips.

Since April 1, 2026, a specific rule applies to first-time applicants for benefits (people who have never been compensated or have not been compensated for more than twenty years). The minimum duration of work is reduced to five months instead of six to open rights to the ARE. In practical terms, you need to gather the payslips and the employer certificate covering precisely this reduced period for the calculation to be correct.

Identity document and personal situation: what the form really requires

The online registration form requires proof of your identity. The list of accepted documents is broader than one might often think.

  • National identity card or passport, even expired within certain validity limits set by decree
  • Civil or military disability card with photograph
  • For foreign nationals: residence card, “skills and talents” residence permit, or other valid residence title allowing work in France

An expired residence permit blocks registration, even if a renewal receipt has been submitted. This point regularly creates blocking situations for foreign applicants.

You will also need your social security number and your Vitale card (or a rights certificate). These elements serve to link your file to your social situation and to verify your rights to health coverage during the job search period.

Bank account details, employment contract, and certificate: often forgotten documents

A bank account statement is necessary to receive benefits. The RIB must be in your name, not that of a third party. A joint account works, but an account in the name of a parent or spouse without co-ownership will be refused.

The work certificate and the final settlement statement complete the end-of-contract file. The certificate attests to the duration of your employment and the nature of the position held. The final settlement statement summarizes the amounts paid upon termination. These two documents do not directly serve to calculate the ARE, but France Travail may request them in case of doubt regarding the information in the employer certificate.

If you have worked for several employers during the reference period, gather the certificates and payslips from each employer. Registration only takes into account periods covered by supporting documents.

Special case: registration without ever having worked

France Travail accepts registrations from people who have never held a job. In this case, no employer certificate or payslip is required. Registration opens access to support (workshops, job offers, training), but not to ARE compensation. The identity document, RIB, and social security number are sufficient to start the process.

Automatic registration and RSA applicants: a different path

Since January 2025, RSA beneficiaries and their spouses are automatically registered with France Travail without any action on their part. A letter informs them of this registration. This mechanism aims to integrate these individuals into a support pathway towards employment as soon as their social rights are opened.

However, this automatic registration does not exempt them from providing supporting documents. During the first meeting with a counselor, the same identity and personal situation documents will be requested. The available data does not allow for a conclusion that all RSA beneficiaries receive a summons within the same time frame: feedback from the field varies on this point depending on the agencies.

Online registration with France Travail: concrete process and pitfalls to anticipate

The process is done on francetravail.fr via the “Register, re-register” service. The form is unique: it combines the registration request, the benefits request, and the appointment scheduling for the first interview.

  • Scan your documents before starting: the interface requires importing files (PDF or readable photo) for the employer certificate, RIB, and identity document
  • Check that the employer certificate clearly states the reason for the contract termination, as this reason directly influences the right to ARE
  • Keep the summary at the end of registration: it contains your job seeker identifier and the date of your first appointment
  • If you cannot access the internet, France Travail offers in-person assistance at the agency to complete the registration on-site

Any missing document delays the processing of the file, sometimes by several weeks. The first payment of benefits occurs after complete validation of the file, not after simple registration.

The registration date determines the starting point of your rights. Delaying the process, even by a few days, mechanically reduces the compensation period. Preparing all the documents before starting the form remains the most reliable way to avoid a gap between the end of the contract and the beginning of support.
